The Obrien’s bathroom remodel

March3

Day 1 Obrien Bathroom Remod

I don’t know what they were thinking after watch my bathroom remodel for the last 6 months.  Maybe they learned something by watching Kristen and I.

Look OutAs we learned last nite, there is always something.  The old bench in the shower was made of bricks, and there wasn’t any thermal layer from the adjacent attic space.   Now we know why Kelly’s lil’piggies are always so cold in there.  Don’t worry dog we’ll fix that too.

The plumbing will always have a rig job in it somewhere and Yep… there it is under the old shower pan. Better pickup some copper.  Check back for daily updates on this one cuz its already done.  There ain’t nothing to it but to do it!

Ok I know we been taking too many breaks, but hey its moving right along, no delay in supplies, and everything is QA’d.  Except we did run into a little snag with the city, something about cleaning up all the construction debris on the side of the house…. No biggie, we’ll get right on that.

So lets work this a little diffrenent.   This first picture is of course the warehouse where we keep all our recieved materials.  Them material handler dudes are pretty cool.

Next we have the new plumbing job, the old job was….. lets just say its was Jerry riggged and I don’t know any Jerry’s.  We ran a new T joint at the bottom of the cold line to send water to the toliet next door.  We also drilled a hole in the 2×4 so the pipe now runs through it and not around it.  New pipe and joints all the way up and didn’t solder on that fancy pressure balancing valve.

New Plumbing

maybe a little better picture,  I’ll have to talk to the camera man tonite!

You see Kelly installed the 2×8 blocking in between the verticle 2×4s.  This is to give the 40mil liner support.

Well he got creative there where the plumbing comes in.  Then he used 3 preasure treated  2×4’s to build up the front curb and fastened tat to the 3×4 subfloor.  He did have to remove some floor tile in his way.  He was bitchin…..that shi_ is hard to get up.

Kmans shower

When we set the 3 piece shower pan drain we added a 2′x2′ square for 1/2″ ply.  We did this to cover up the fairly big hole in the subfloor from the previous shower plus to add strength and to give our drain base a nice true surface.  We fastend that ply to the subfloor,  but not the drain.

We added a couple layers of some 4mil plastic as a moister gaurd.  That pan is ready for some deck mud.

I wish we would have had the camera when we mixed up the mud,  I could have had a whole page just on that.  It was cold and rainy and we mixed in the garage and then hand carried the cement up the stairs in orange home depot buckets.

I’ll let these speak for themselves. But there it is, almost custom shower pan, the slope runs level with the drain and then rises 1/4″ for every foot moving away from the drain.

I’ll get our time sheet updated and the materials cost list.  Its looking like 20 man hrs and a couple hundred in parts,  lot better than the 2-3 GRAND the plumber would want.
